Installing the TEM Android Agent will allow an Android device to be managed within Tivoli Endpoint Manager (BigFix).

Prerequisites

Installation Steps

  1. Download the latest TEM Android Agent

    • From the browser at http://software.bigfix.com/android
    • Or from the Android Marketplace (TEM Android Agent will be available on the Marketplace after the submission is accepted)
  2. If downloaded from the browser, click to install the TEM Android Agent
    • You will receive a warning on some devices if your device is not set to allow applications to be installed from "non-Market sources". You will need to check the options on the device under "Settings > Applications" to allow application from unknown sources.
    • Some devices completely prohibit installing apps from non-Market sources. On these devices, you will need to install from the Android Marketplace (once the TEM Android Agent has been added).
  3. After the TEM Agent is installed, click OK to accept the app permissions (the Android Agent will require many permissions to manage the phone) and click "Activate" to allow the Android Agent to be a "Device Administrator" (which allows it to view and set security policies).
  4. When the app launches, enter the name of the BigFix Server (or Relay), the user's email address, and whether the device is owned by the user or by the organization (which can be used to target policies).
    • The server address entered in the box must be reachable on the network by the device
    • The port number does not need to be entered if using the default port number port 52311. If using a non-standard port-number, the address must be entered with the port number (e.g., mdm.companyname.com:12345)
    • The email address is reported as the "username" in the BigFix Console.
    • If the user selects that the device is "Personal", then location tracking is disabled automatically. The ownership of the device is visible in the BigFix Console and can be used to target policies to devices.
  5. When the user clicks "Connect", the Android Agent will download the masthead file from the server or relay entered in the box. After it successfully downloads the masthead, it will operate very similar to any other BigFix Agent.

After installation, it typically takes a few minutes for the Android Agent to report all its properties and Fixlets. If you experience errors, please see the Android Agent troubleshooting steps.
